Importance of Friendships



Most people don't realize how important friendship and relationships are to a person’s health. As having strong friendships with others benefit people immensely, here are some ways friendships and relationships can positively affect you. 


  • Friendship plays a major role in maintaining your mental health and happiness. Without much social interactions, one can be swept into depression, or addictions such as smoking and drinking. A Swedish study proved that with physical activity and an active social life, one could live several years longer. Having friends also helps you become more motivated to achieve your goals. Having friends increases your sense of purpose causing you to do more. Friends push you to do more than you are usually comfortable with.


  • Friends are also the main source of emotional support along with your family. Friends help each other get through and overcome the hard times. One study shows that students who were depressed were twice as likely to overcome it if they had supportive friends around them. When we go through hard times, our true friends are always there to support and help us through. As friends, they are more likely to relate to your hardships and things you are going through than your parents. A good way to relieve stress is to call or talk to your friends about the negatives in your life.


  • Having friends increases your sense of purpose causing you to do more. Friends push you to do more than you are usually comfortable with. They play a big part in increasing your self esteem and becoming more confident. Talking and listening to friends develops your communication skills becoming more and more social.



Having friends in our lives is one of the most important necessities of life. Without any friends, we would have an extremely difficult time going about our days. We need someone to rely on when we are feeling down, someone to share your best moments, and someone that helps you become a better person.
